Nowadays Moscow is the city where the past and the present live side by side in reciprocal tolerance and respect. Nearby old convents and cathedrals, there tower above modern business centres and skyscrapers. But, originally, Moscow is the centre of the Russian history. Being the symbol of the the city, Red Square is the most renowned city square in Moscow and, arguably, one of the best-known in the world. It separates the Kremlin, the former royal fort and currently the official residence of Russia's President, from a historic trading quarter called Kitai-gorod. As the principal Moscow streets radiate from here in all directions, Red Square is normally regarded as the central square of Moscow and of the country. Resurrection Gate is the only existing gate of the Kitai-gorod in Moscow. It connects the north-western end of Red Square with Manege Square and gives its name to Voskresenskaya Square (called Resurrection Square) situated nearby. Alexander Garden is one of Moscow's first public parks. It occupies all the length of the western Kremlin wall in front of the Moscow Manege. The State Historical Museum of Russia is a museum of the Russian history placed between Red Square and Manege Square. Its exhibitions vary from relics of the prehistoric people inhabiting present-day Russia to priceless works of art obtained by the members of the Romanov family. The number of works of art in the collection displayed in the museum numbers in millions. The Cathedral of Basil the Blessed is a Russian Orthodox cathedral erected in Red Square. It was built to commemorate the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan, and at present symbolises the geometric centre of Moscow and the hub of its growth. They say Moscow will certainly exhaust you before you exhaust its possibilities.
